 "Ipod Colour" 2005-07-24

I got my ipod colour as soon as it came out and am very happy with it. Its easy to use and you dont even need any instructions to know how to use it. It starts up quickly, looks good, battry life good, memory good, more or less everything about it is good.

The only down side is that it does not play movie clips. But i suppose it is an MP3 player and not an portable movie player so its not so bad.

My friend got his ipod colour for free from http://www.freeiPods.com/?r=18111355 and it was very easy. Theres even an article from the BBC on it http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/3683524.stm. I now want to do the same and get another for free this time.

I have one of these ipods and i am very happy with it. It would be good however if you could watch movie clips on it but as it is an MP3 player and not portable movie player i suppose its not so bad if it does not view clips. The memory is good, starts up quickly, works well, navigation is very easy dont even need to read the instructons to use it. Sounds very good could not wish for anything else (apart from the movie clip thing)

My friend got his free from http://www.freeiPods.com/?r=18111355 it was so easy that i want to do the same. Theres even a BBC article on it at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/3683524.stm, its now possible to do this from the UK.

 "Lovely, with flaws" 2005-06-20
By
This is a really lovely bit of kit. Clear display, lots of controls.

BUT, the screen scratches unacceptably easily. I am comparing this against my other portable electrical goods with colour displays, mostly phones. I drop and batter my phones, with no damage to the screen which just take it. Obviously though, when splashing out on an expensive item like the iPod I took extreme care, even so, when sitting in my pocket the screen became littered with scratches within (quite honestly) seconds. Result upset ipod owner. I would have thought that if my cheapy phone manufacturers can devise a scratch resistant screen then the over-priced ipod (which it is, lets be honest, butwe will still pay, so fair play to Apple), should surely also be able to muster up a scratch resistant screen. Alas not.

Also the menus for simple playing are simple and straightforward, but other options like repeat and shuffle are hidden in the extras menu which can't be accessed from the now playing screen, or chosen on a whim. Also, and this is a real shame, you can't make playlists on-the-go. You have to think of a playlist whilst the ipod is connected to the computer. Which is as I said a real shame.

This piece of equipment is beautifully designed. But like all beautiful objects, it is fragile. Expect to splash out for an additional case, and prepare to surrender to long-trips through the menus.

Still, I wouldn't change it for a different model, hence three stars for all the flaws.

I got my iPod photo 30GB about ten days after launch and have had a lot of time to play around with it. All I can say is it's a fantastic machine and it has made my car 10 disc autochanger redundant overnight. Excellent for the commute, stick on a playlist and you're away.

I'm particularly impressed with iTunes and the ease with which everything works and as a lifetime windows user, am seriously considering the switch to Mac.

I have noticed no problems with battery life if you follow a few simple principles. Set backlight to 2 or 5 secs (off preferably) and use play lists feature. This minimises the hard drive spinning which is a killer for battery life of any portable device. 15 hrs is easy, I charge it for about three hours once a week and only let it run down completly once a month.

Colour screen is great and you get your album art if you want, just import it while you're ripping your cds. To make it easier to find your photos just organise them into sub folders on your PC and then iTunes replicates this on your iPod.

Only negative is the time it takes to rip music into itunes although this will vary depending on your PC. Still gets 5*

I bought this iPod photo, the 60GB one, about 2 weeks ago and it has been one of the best purchases on my part ever. one disadvantage is the short battery life (which isn't that bad) and the fact that it scratches so easily. by a case with it when you get it (the iSkin Evo2 cases are cool, just make sure you dont get them in black, they look like crap.)
well thats all there is to say.
Enjoy.

"What a fantastic piece of hardware" 2005-03-18
By
I bought this product in the airport on the way back to Belfast from London, due to a special offer. As soon as you open the box and see the way the product is packaged you know you're onto a winner!

This is my first portable MP3 Player, and I must say I'm a complete convert. The Ipod is such a sleek piece of hardware, and the click wheel so inovative and easy to use. I have a huge collection of Cds and Photos, so being able to carry them about in something as small as a cigarette packet is brilliant. It's also very easy to navigate all your tracks and photos. Having said that, you must make sure you have them all labelled correctly in the first place. You'll also need a USB 2.0 or firewire card in your PC/Mac, so make sure you have this first.

The Ipod Photo also comes with a great docking station and an ipod pouch, plus the neccessary cables to hook it to the TV or hifi. I use mine through my car stereo and already couldn't live without it! Very highly recommended!!!!

"The iPod Photo is the future!!" 2005-02-22
By
The iPod Photo, is a fantastic machine. Reading one review suggesting iTunes is 'stupid arcane' software, annoyed me because this person had not checked their facts properly. First iTunes is very easy to operate, and also with the new iTunes 4.7.1 it makes it even easier to operate and use your iPod. Also with regular updates from the apple website where you can download software updates on to your iPod via a computer and it increases the performance of your iPod. You can also go to www.apple.com/support/iPod and you can see for yourself the fantastic functions the iPod can do. You also have contacts, notes and a calendar on the iPod which you can sync with your computer. Another very important function the iPod has is backing large files on to your iPod. I had two quicktime files both 5mb each and I simply dragged them on to my iPod and it was a piece of cake.
If your into audio books the iPod has software for audio books as well.
Apple have fixed the problem regarding charging the battery on the iPod. When the iPod is connected to a computer the iPod battery starts charging. If you charge the iPod for about 2 hours, the battery is 80% charged.
I have nothing against anybody writing a review, but they should make sure they have the facts first before stating their opinion on a product.

"Why do people buy these instead of irivers" 2005-02-20
By
I was thinking about buying one of these i thought it was gonna be awesome and beat everyone elses players without a problem, then i came across my friends iriver H340 i was deflated instantly. the problem is that the iriver seems to be better all around. The price of the iriver is considerably better, and it will play video, has radio, records in high quality.
the iriver also had the ability to transfer photos off a gigital camera directly without the need for a computer, and didnt compress them to a low resolution as well, i also like how you can just drag abd drop music onto the iriver without having to use some stupid arcane software like itunes.

I have also heard that the iriver is having new software designed for it by a group called rockbox, which means in the near future it could have even more features.

My friends who own ipods have had many problems with their players, and have had to reset them alot and they find itunes very annoying to use.

However the ipod is good cause it can plug into the tv and has nice easy to use software, but due to the superior sound and build quality of the iriver combined with the lower price and larger number of features and accessories included i am going to go with the iriver h340.

 "Its Just So Cool!" 2005-02-18

OK, I have a digital camera - I didn't really need to get an iPhoto - but it's so cool! I love having the album artwork on it (be warned you will spend hours, days loading all your cds and artwork into the iPod).

The click menu is great and so easy to use. I am impressed with the quality of sound. My ipod goes everywhere with me. It even helps keep me fit as I don't mind walking places so much when I have such a large selection of music to choose from.

The quality of the photos is top notch as well although I seriously don't think it will come in handy, it might be good for people with kids to show off their little darlings to some sounds.

I'm still not getting anything like the advertised battery life but it does get better after every charge.

If, like I was, you are still swithering then my advice is go but it - you won't be disappointed.

"Better than the 3rd Generation as you'd expect" 2005-02-15
By Peter Barfoot
I received my ipod photo a month before the christmas period so have had plenty of time to play around so I thought I'd give you all my opinion. I had already owned the 3rd generation ipod for around a year when i lost it. Oh the joy of waking up afetr a heavy night to find now ipod. However when I came to replace it if found I was able to get the ipod photo for less than I orginally paid for my 3rd gen ipod. this obviuosly is my first plus for the new ipod the drop in price.

The addition of the click wheel is another gret move by apple. At first I will admit that I found it took some getting used to compared to the old method but once you have the hang of it eveything seems quicker and easier. The menu is just as simple to use and sychronising with itunes couldn't be easier.

Music playback is still top rate as you'd expect and the addition of album art is fantastic. I must admit that I have spent a long time allocating album covers to tracks i don't think anyone with the option will be able resist. The one draw back with regrad music playback is the damn iopd headphones sadly if the music you listen to envolves any sort of bass prefer for distortion at high volumes. I brought a pair of sony ear bud headphones also from amazon to accompany the ipod and are without a doubt one of the best acessories I have purchased alond with the evo2 iskin.

The photo's are a brilliant addition as you can spend those annoying hours on public transport reliving old memories. Be warned however it use up to 4 mega pixel photo's. This could explain some of the issues that have arisen for the previous reviwer.

All in all ipod has changed the way I listen to music forever. some may say it has even changed their lives. IF YOU HAVEN'T YET GOT AN IPOD GET ONE IT'S THAT SIMPLE!!!!!

"Note for people who want and MP3 for working out with..." 2008-06-10
By Louise Hampshire (england)
I bought this after deciding that i wanted to up grade from my mini disk. I had heard how great MP3 players were for working out with as they could store a real mixture of music.

DONT USE THIS THOUGH!!!!! it is (i have been told) that this this is the last ipod apple made before they went totally digital. In other words there is still a small moving part within here. SO if you work out for anything longer than say 15mins - especially with an activity like running, then this part starts to shift about and eventually it freezes. After time, this part (within mine) must be totally loose as now it is so sporadic on if it is going to work or not. Ive lost count the times ive had the sad faced ipod logo come up!

I would go for a nano or another make if you are after something to work out with. Even with 4G you can still store hundreds of songs so the capacity is not something that should affect your enjoyment of the workout at all. I have the 8G nano now and am more than happy with it (until the internal battery runs out on that!!!).

I've always been a fan of iPods, so this may be a little biased, but in my opinion you can't get much better than this product!

Firstly, looks. The 2.0in (diagonal) screen is absolutely gorgeous, very sharp and clear, and I think it's fine for viewing photos on as well. The smooth casing with the clickwheel (what an invention!) looks great as well, and the product, while being thicker than ever before, still has an undeniable cool factor.

The storage space is amazing, and I don't know anyone who would ever need more than this. Its fab being able to play any song that I own at any time, and you'd be surprised how much my iPod comes into my social life now. One of the other thngs I love about this is the fact that you can use it as an external drive, to store files on, which means there is no need to buy a seperate memory stick if you're prepared to carry around the connector cable.

OK, bad points. Firstly, everyone says that it scratches easily, but to be honest, I haven't found that at all, mine still looks pristine. I'm not really sure why, as I keep it in my bag with all my other stuff for day-to-day use. Secondly, it is obviously expensive, and it might be hard to justify buying it. However, if you compare it to other players on the market, it is actually pretty good value for the price of each gigobyte.

Overall I think this is the best player on the market if you need more than 4GB of storage space

Well, what can you say about what is probably the best thing you'll buy this year or next? Let the kids go hungry and get yourself one of these little beauties, that's what I say.

Let me start off my review with a confession. Since picking my iPod up the other day I haven't seen my family, or indeed daylight, for days. No Christmas TV repeats for me! The capacity on the 60GB model is quite simply HUGE - plenty of room for your entire music collection as well as, and here's where the new iPod is a delight, all your photos in suberb quality. There's room for thousands!!!

No need to get technical here - just read the technical blurb instead. All you need to know is this thing's a monster.

Feel like hooking your iPod up to the TV to show your friends/family/strangers your holiday snaps with an accompanying soundtrack? No problem for this little fella. And the battery life is less of a problem than on previous models.

And what's more it looks great when I'm showing it off to jealous people!

Go on, what are you waiting for. BUY ONE!!!!

I purchased this blind and I'm so so pleased I opted for the photo version. It really is so minimally bigger than the 20Gb 4 Gen model but the fact that its in colour makes a massive difference.

Apple really does make the coolest gear around. This is so so so much better than any other MP3 players out there and it work so so well with iTunes.

Perfect. Go out and buy the iPod Photo.

"iPod Photo - worth the upgrade" 2004-12-14
By crliege (Guildford, Surrey)
This is my third iPod, and it has answered more than a couple of quibbles I had with the others. Firstly, the size of the disc is a real bonus for anyone with a volume of CDs and/or tracks in his music collection, it's great to be able to move about with your whole music library in your pocket - wherever you're going, gym, for a walk, on holiday. Particularly on holiday. Makes those idle beach moments just that much more pleasurable. It'll still take you the best part of a week to process 900 CDs, but once the legwork is done, updating your library and playlists is a doddle.

That I can also cram in heavens knows how many photos (the ad says 25,000) is a real bonus. Mind you, who on earth wants to lug around, let alone look at that many holiday snaps? Once set-up, the slideshow function works well when connected to a TV, although watching it on the iPod is a little odd, as you get a row of three pictures in thumbnails. The one just gone is very small, the one you're looking at is somewhat larger and back to the small size for the upcoming photo. None of these sizes are designed for viewing your photos in comfort. If, however, you just use it to cruise through your photo library, just like whizzing through all your music, track by track, the thing really gets a move on. You can select your own music to accompany your slideshow, which adds a nice touch for family and friends. I could see the combination of these features as being useful to unattended portable business presentations too.

The dial is now much more positive, with a distinct click to the touch when selecting one of the main functional areas. A neat feature in this model, which I hadn't noticed in previous versions, is that the track being played pauses when the external source (headphones or hi-fi) is disconnected.

There are a couple of negatives, but they are far outweighed by the slick functionality and smooth styling of this bit of kit. You must have a Mac or PC to properly arrange and import your photos, so the plethora of iPod devices which allow you to store photos on previous iPods, although they will still work, won't present your photos in a viewable format on the iPod. Then there are those earbud headphones! They might be a fashion statement, but apart from the discomfort, any man with hairy ears (everyone over 35, then) will find them unusable. OK, the iPod works so well, that having to go out and buy real headphones isn't that much of a hassle that it's likely to take the smile off your face, especially when you consider that you own the best of the current series of iPods.

"Superb Warehouse deal and I'm an Ipod convert!" 2007-06-25
By Spencer Clarke (UK)
I only converted to MP3 players at all in 2006. Started with a Zen Sleek, which was pretty damn good, but at 20gb, completely full. So I bit the bullet and went for a refurbed 60gb Ipod from Amazon Warehouse Deals. The first thing to say is that Amazon Warehouse was superb. Not a mark on the Ipod - looked exactly as new. And at just 160 GBP cheaper than you can buy a 30gb in the high street!

As people have said, nothing much in the box. So I bought a Logic 3 dock for 17.99 - half the price of an Apple Dock + remote, but with fantastic functionality, and a charger in the box.

Armed with my dock, and loaded up through itunes (agree with other reviewers - very clunky and slow in its latest incarnation) have now got it hooked up to my stereo, and I love it! Easier to use than the Zen, sound quality great, easy to 'remote control' from the Logic3 dock. Not used the video, but I didn't buy it for that.

As a music player, thoroughly recommended...

 "riddled with flaws" 2007-06-15
By jrhartley
It never ceases to amaze me the amount of apple devotees in the world. Having bought a G4 Cube which didn't work out of the box (and having to speak to the head of Apple Europe to actually get them to refund me as opposed to provide a replacement as they wanted to) I was hesitant about buying an ipod. Sure, they look cool and you can get your name etched on the back by a laser, but would it work. So many people I knew had them and were telling me how great they were, I figured this had to be something that apple had completely cracked the market on.

Unfortunately not. The first thing is that the hard drive speed means that if you, for example, rip one of you DVD using a program like Videora, you get a lot of pauses and stutter. It's very hard to watch a film without the image stopping and the audio carrying on, then the film catching up again, and so on. So its not ideal for watching films on the go.

Then there is the issue regarding the sound occassionally just shooting up to maximum without you actually touching the controls. Then the times that you can't actually turn your ipod off as the HDD is just spinning aay and you have to hard reset it. This is before you start using the clunky itunes software to load your music onto the thing (tip - don't - use Winamp instead, its far less resource hungry and means you don't have to install YET ANOTHER media player to support your ipod.

Lastly, the tight bods at Apple don't even include a UK adapter in the box - so that's another £20 which I think just says it all. People I think cling to that hippy, small guy vs. microsoft image of Steve Jobs and Apple. The truth is, they are just two massive global corporations who want your money, and Apple has worked out if something looks cool, people get irrational and pay more than they have to for it.

"Brilliant but a bit strapped for extras" 2006-07-24
By Andy W (London)
I'm very impressed with my new ipod video.

The sound quality is good and the video quality is actually pretty amazing so watching a film on a long train journey or flight is very easy and enjoyable (You can even read subtitles)

it would have got 5 stars from me except for Apple being notoriously tight again. Mine was a gift but had it not been I would have been seriously annoyed at having to shell out for all the extra bits that you do really need - a mains adapter for one! a dock, a case (very easy to scratch) etc etc

If your video playback freezes and loses sound (as mine did) it is simply because the fimware v1.1 has a glitch in it, to make it all perfect again simply downgrade your firmware to v1.0 (google it to find out how)

"Headaches to start with, but well worth the effort" 2006-06-27
By Deepayan Basu Ray (Brighton, UK)
I've had this iPod for a week now, and it has been an experience of two halves.

The Bad Stuff:

The iPod 60GB has some seriously picky firmware, and will more often than not give you a headache to install. Unfortunately for me, I had to re-install Windows XP - not as hard as you think, but tedious nonetheless. Once that was done, everything finally worked, the iPod was recognised on the computer, and things were starting to copy over... or so I thought. I experienced problems with downloading photos from my camera (a soft reset fixed that problem), and have yet to figure out how to copy over music videos onto the unit. Oh yeah, and it scractches a little bit too easily.

The one beef I have is the ridiculous strategy to make every bit of essential kit as a separate accessory. You'd think for £260, you'd at least get an AC Charger... this is just taking the piss.

The Good Stuff:

It's a great little machine once you get all your tracks on there. Playlists are easy enough to use, and the sound quality is great. As a jazz musician, I have some pretty high standards, and this one has met nearly all the expectations.

Recommendations: Wait a bit to see if the firmware has been dealt with. If you are comfortable tinkering with your computer, go for it. Once the initial technical problems are overcome, this machine promises to be worth the money.

"A comparison to the Creative Zen Vision M opposition" 2006-06-01
By C. Hatfield (Leafy Warwickshire)
Based upon several weeks/months of use of both the 60GB Ipod and Creative's Zen Vision M, I offer the following summary of my personal opinion..

What Apple does better:

Click wheel ease of use - less (over) sensitive than creative Vision M pad. More intuitive controls.

Bigger choice of accessories.

Styling.

Bigger disk capacity (creative only offer a 30GB version)

What Apple does worse:

Software is not as good. Nothing to convert videos to a suitable format. Software for auto naming of tracks and conversion of a lot of CD's to MP3 is not nearly as intuitive.

Screen not nearly as good.

Where I can't split hairs:

I found the sound quality and battery life to be comparable.

Both (once you've got used to them) feel good to use.

Both suffer appallingly from scratches. The ipod came straight out of the box into an iSkin protective case and it marked on the 'shiny side' immediately. God alone knows how!

Try them both before you buy to see which you prefer to operate, but note that the computer software that comes with the creative product is superior. You pays yer money......

By M. J. Baker (N.Yorks)
This model is an excellent introduction to iPods. It has most of the features of the Classic but is cheaper with a smaller (but quite considerable) memory of 30GB. As with all the iPods it uses iTunes (free) to sort out all the items you want to download to the Pod. From Audio Books to Rock and Photos to Podcasts. Also, part of it can be used as a hard drive for storing documents in .txt format. It comes with 4 games loaded though it is easy to buy and download others. It can also store your contacts and calender via your PC. Not forgetting that videos, video podcasts and certain TV programmes can be downloaded and viewed. A decent sized screen and good picture. A great starter at a competitive price.

"Looks can be so deceiving" 2007-06-04
By Mr. S. Doherty (UK, London)
I bought the White 30Gb video iPod a the xmas before last, and at first I was so happy with it. It looked great, sounded great, and seemed the best.

After a month or so, It started playing up. The battery is a disgrace to be honest, one second it says it's on it's last limb, next thing I have 3/4 full battery. I charge it over night, and its 1/2 charged. The iPod is a joke, it's more of a fashion statment then a mp3 player.

I brought it back, and the shop gave me another one, now a few months ago, the iPod regulary cleared, literally everything, I did not restart it, also my computer isn't great, so I can't have thousands of music on my computer, I was left with nothing. It kept doing this, till one day last month, it just refuses to acknowledge a connection to the computer, I try pressing all the buttons, restarting etc and it won't work at all. Only works when I plug into the mains charger, then soon as I unplug it, it cuts out and the screen fades away.

Please, trust me, do not buy this product, complete waste of time. My Creative Zen Vison M 30Gb should be at my house tommorow ordered from Amazon too.

iPod's are made to brake, trust me, do not buy. I don't know one person yet who have owned it for over a year, and says there hasn't been alot of problems.

"iTunes software is flawed ..." 2007-08-26
By fantasy escapist (Essex, UK)
Yes, I've had this iPod for nearly a year, and I can tell you, I've had my fair share of problems with mainly the iTunes software in particular.

Infuriating doesn't even begin to describe iTunes. Firstly, I hate the way the whole computer freezes for ages when I connect the iPod to the computer, then it takes longer for it to update. Only, and here's my main annoyance with this, my iPod cannot update anymore(it comes up all the time now with 'attempting to copy to the disk "OWNER'S IPOD" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to' - even after clicking Restore various times), and this has nothing to do with any fault the iPod has as it works fine as is still like new(despite a few scratches it easily gets on the click wheel since I didn't have any proper protection for it then).

So, my iPod, having been restored again and again without successful updating of songs and videos I wanted to put on it, it's virtually useless, leaving me with the decison of what to do. I have now brought a temporary Creative Zen Stone that doesn't need any software to get the songs onto the actual mp3 player itself and the problems that come along with it.

To it's credit, it does have alot of features(like video, that plays really well), and good sound, but iTunes really lets this down. iPod are decent of you want to conform and fit in but there are better mp3 players than the 'all-powerful iPod', in my opinion.

 "Wonderful but..." 2007-01-02
By brightonalex (Brighton)
The Ipod is clearly the best sounding, most user friendly and, subjectively, best looking MP3 player out there. My one major grumble is - and I've not owned any other for an extended period so can't compare - reliability. I've just sent back my 4th Ipod to Apple. They have all failed within a year which is awful. I'm quite a heavy user (10-15 hours a week) but even still this is poor. I'm just thankful they've all gone within the year so I've been able to pick up a free replacement.

"Big nd bad. Know anither MP3 with this many features?" 2006-09-26
By Ryan - H.M.H. (Birmingham England)
Good, but not the best.

When my Ipod Nano broke, so I sought out a new MP3. Many of my friends recommended a video Ipod because they had a massive amount of memory and the fact that they can play videos. So, looking at both white and black versions, I decided to get the black, I think it looks better. And, when I first got it I was very impressed.....

For holding 15,000 songs, or 25,000 photos, the Ipod is not bad in size standards. It is apparently smaller than the 30GB one. While listening to songs, you can see the album artwork as well, in vivid detail. Everything is in colour, the manufacturers boast about such technology. The videos are excellent as well, they sound just as good as the songs and look just as good as modern day TV, the timing between the sound and pictures is perfect. The games are decent, not that entertaining, but do look good in colour screen. My favourite game is `Music Quiz', where the Ipod plays a song and you have to guess which it is in a few seconds. The Ipod has a sensitive touch, when you move down play lists. The controls are very simple; you don't really even need to read a manual. The Ipod can go to really high volumes, but this can screw up the Apple headphones it comes with.

The only downside features wise is the fact that it isn't very durable and so if you scrape it then the black paint might come off, doesn't look very good. Talking about durability the screen can be scratched very easily, and any scratch always leaves a thin long white mark along the screen.

Now, why I only gave it four stars: Sometimes it will completely screw up. The Ipod will show no sign of life and you will think it is completely broken. To me this only happens for a few days, but it is extremely annoying. This usually happens when it is charging on the computer. I leave it in a room charging, come back a few hours later, and it will be turned off. I try to turn it back on, but it won't, then a few days later; it will be as good as new. But at least it has permanently messed up, yet...........

Overall this is an excellent machine in what it does; videos, songs, photos and memory. But in what YOU do with it, it isn't really that good. I really think the manufacturers where concentrating on all of the features. I really don't understand why it screws up roughly every two weeks, which is how often I charge it up because it plays 50hours of music when the battery is full. Well, the massive amount of good things overpower the bad things:

 "Get a white one!" 2006-07-31
By Andy W (London)
I have the white version (see my full review there) but I just wanted to urge those looking at the black one as the best option to consider the classic white one instead.

The black looks cheap and plasticy and the finger prints which are an obvious problem on the reflective back of all ipods is now a problem on the front - the black gloss finish shows them up a treat!

 "best MP3 out there" 2006-07-12
By Pierre RENARD (Brussels)
There are several reasons why i consider the i-pod over any other MP3, yes it is rather expensive and yes it doesn't come with all the accessories but still there is no better MP3 out there.

I have owned well over 5 MP3 each from different companies and quite frankly all those SAMSUNG/CREATIVE and other MP3's are cheap yes, but the quality is several times worse. First off those other MP3's don't have the sound quality, none of them.

Another notable thing is the memory this little accessory has. 60GB is quite a lot and more than enough for all the songs you need, and you can add all of your favorite videos, music video's, audio libraries and such.

But with other MP3's even if you had all of this memory it would still be useless because you know why? They can't scroll through all the songs you want like this i-pod can. The Apple I-pod gives you an easy way to scroll through all the songs you need in a mattter of seconds.

Add the fact that it looks slick and something you can show off to everyone and it'll earn you more than for what your money paid for.

OK fine yes there are a few bad things...

First off the i-pod can easily get scratched... but I mean seriously just buy the nice silicon case and you won't ever have to worry about your i-pod getting scratched again...

Second point, you can't charge from a plug? buy the adapter...

that's about it really... what more do you want on the i-pod? a way to play video games? yeah you can play the i-pod games if you want even though it would hardly be the reason why you bought this accessory.

Add to the fact that you can buy speaker booster's to start a party or an adapter to the car so you can listen to all your songs in the car and this is really one of the best deal's you can get out there.

"The only music player you ever need" 2008-10-22
By Mr. N. J. Henderson (Coventry, England)
It took me along time to finally take the plunge into digital music players, and to be honest the ipod won the day really due to their huge popularity.

I've never regretted it. I've had my trusty 80gb for about 2 years now, and it's superb.

You really can't argue with the ipod+itunes setup, its quick, easy and works very well.

The ipod itself sounds excellent, the scroll menu is easy, navigating tracks is a breeze.

One thing I will say is that at full volume the ipod is almost deafening, I suggest setting the volume limit to a sensible level to protect your ears.

I can honestly think of no reason not to recommend the ipod, perhaps the only thing against it is the back scratches very easily, but that's easily solved by investing in a decent quality protective case.

Well done Apple, job done.

Absolute quality. Initially I was worried about spending £170 on this but 3 months down the line all my fears have been put to rest.

In reality its pretty impossibly to fill an 80GB ipod (i'd like to meet someone who has) but you're paying an extra £60ish for an extra 75GB of memory over the average nano.

I would only recommend this to people who see music as a hobby and have a vast music library to fill this baby up.

There's a minor drawback with the video player because you have to do some converting crap but it's just a teeny tiny chink in the armoury of what is a fantastic multimedia device.

Screen size is good, click wheel is predictable amazing, battery life could be longer, aesthetically pleasing, invest in some quality headphones and you are there!

 "ipods cost the earth" 2007-09-25
By Shopping kills (UK)

How much is an ipod really worth?

ipods are one of the least environmentally friendly gadgets available. According to Apple they are only meant to last 12 months and they are designed to prevent customers replacing the toxic batteries when they wear out. So the 10 million ipods sold are all destined to sit in a landfills for the next million years leaking toxic chemicals.

Environmentalists have been criticising Apple since the ipod's original release.

How have Apple responded?

By using less packaging and boasting that they are green. What are they on?

The following is taken from Thegreenguide.com:

"But while Apple declares that they are `committed to reducing the environmental impact of the work [they] do and the products [they] create' the iPod is not designed to have its toxin-laden battery replaced or removed. Apple can live up to their environmental commitment by making all iPod's green.

How to Make a Green Apple

* Produce toxin-free iPods

* Design iPods so batteries can be easily and affordably replaced

* Provide take back and recycling options for iPods and other electronics"

Visit thegreenguid.com to sign a petition asking Apple to make greener ipods.

Just don't buy one.

I had an ipod. It lasted 2 years. It wasn't worth costing the earth.

I have had many other Apple products like iPod Nano's, iPod Shuffle and even the iPod Video. This 80GB Nano looks exactly the same as the iPod Video but this slightly thicker in width.

It can do all the usual stuff like play music, videos etc. And play plenty of it too! 20,000 songs or 20 hours of video! WOW!!!

I am a Graphic Designer so I use Apple Macs for my work, and I often need to download files from one computer to another. Not many people mention this but the iPod Nano is also a hard drive where you can drag and drop files so instead of buying an external hard drive why not use the iPod.

The 80GB is massive! When you consider that an average MacBook Laptop is around 60GB!

Although the iPod states 80GB of memory it never is - 75GB would be a better estimate, this is due to preloaded software on the iPod.

Wouldn't it be great if iPods had built-in cameras and had bluetooth capabilities where people could share data??? If someone from Apple is reading this then perhapes you would like to mention this to Steve.

 "Unreliable and expensive" 2008-01-15
By J. Okey
I loved it when I bought it, and for about 6 months it was the best £200 I'd ever spent, but then it started to go wrong, the battery would give up the ghost after about 20 minutes of video playback and if I tried to put it on shuffle it would get to about the 4th song and pack up completely and have to be reset.

I contacted apple and they told me to update the settings and restore it to its original factory setup (deleting everything I had on it, which was quite annoying).

I then made do with it as all I really do is play it at work and in the car but two days ago it completely blew up, the screen died, it would no longer update (the file is corrupt and unreadable, apparantly), and it also erased my hard drive.

If you buy an iPod you will love it for about a year, I guarantee you that but once the one year warranty has expired, things start to go wrong and you really wish you'd bought Japanese, can't go wrong with Sony.

I'm now then 5th out of 7 of my friends who have iPods to have them collapse under the weight of a few songs.

Don't waste your money.

 "Ipod 30GB Video" 2007-12-02
By Sarah Bailey (Bristol, England)
My ipod was given to my Dad last Christmas but as he doesn't use it I now have it. I like the looks and the sound quality and Itunes is very easy to use. The ipod has barely been used but it keeps freezing which is very annoying and the battery life is really poor. I don't know if I have a dodgy one but I would only expect this kind of performance from a much older model. Apart from the obvious drawbacks I love having an ipod and it's very easy to use.

I had a nano but it was old and full, so i wanted the 30GB,

although it is nowhere near full,

+the video player is very good and i would advise people to download a youtube converting package (really good)

- The battery wears down really quickly other players have much longer playing time, so for a long trip it would not be good to watch a film.

over all the ipod is very goodr and i would recomentit to anyone!

By K. Walton (Cheshire)
I love my ipod, its great when it works. Had the sense to take out a (very expensive) guarantee on it when I purchased it. Good job too. The first one failed after about 10 months - would only play certain tracks etc and it was instantly replaced (was told in the shop that this is a very common problem). The one I have now, just over 12 months old, is back to the repairers for the second time with battery related problems....Shame Apple can't invest as much time in making sure their products are relaible as they do in marketing them.

The hard drive failed on my 30gb video IPOD after 17 months. Apple told me it would be cheaper to buy a new IPOD than get Apple to repair it. The most expensive paperweight I have ever bought! Think twice before you buy one, electrical goods that cost this much should last for longer than 12-18 months.
